Piranha II Comma The Spawning

Calling your attention to the latest addition to the Cavalcade's vhs collection, Piranha II, The Spawning. Of particular attention and indication of my particular nerdish leanings, I will also call your attention to the title, Piranha II comma The Spawning. Why the comma? If any form of punctuation should be used, the more practical choice would be a colon. These are the things I spend most of my time contemplating. Grammatical errors also make me laugh. Like when I took this out of the envelope yesterday, I laughed and laughed at the comma for hours. Well, more like ten minutes, but still! There's something wrong with me, I know. Stupid comma aside, this is a sweet frickin' cover. I love the mean-as-the-devil lookin' flying piranha swarm attacking the beach goers. Hmm, new tattoo, maybe? Well, after I get Paul Naschy immortalized as the Hombre Lobo on my forearm. I probably won't get around to watching Piranha II Comma The Spawning any time soon, since the stacks upon stacks of movies are piling up in all the corners of my home, but thought the cover art was worth a mention here. That's why I bought the damn thing anyway.

  1. You crack me up. Maybe they could have thrown in an "etc." at the end. Anyway, I don't remember anything about the movie but the artwork DOES bring back vague childhood memories. Good stuff.

  2. If I had to quantify that cover art, I would say its about 163,000x better than the film itself.

  3. Etc. is for the third installment, no doubt. And I too don't remember watching this, and it needn't be mentioned what a fan I am of Joe Dante's original starring the magnificent Barbara Steele. God, I love how she says Piranha - purr-ah-nnnn-ya. I could listen to that all day.

  4. The original movie was definatly one of the better "Jaws" cash in's and certainly a film I need to revisit at somepoint, especially with the Alexandre Aja remake coming up in 2010 (and in 3d no less), which makes me not want to dismiss it stright away, especially as I loved his remake of "The Hills have eyes".

The most noteworthy thing about Piranha II, is that it is directed by James Cameron, before he went on to direct "The Terminator", but then Roger Corman, always did have an eye for raw talent.

  5. Elwood: James Cameron directed Piranha 2, The Spawning? WTF? Wow. "From the director of Titanic and Piranha 2, The Spawning, comes a coming of age tale about blah blah blah". Haha. Also Hills Have Eyes was indeed outstanding, but Mirrors makes me never want to watch one of his movies again. Granted, I'll be one of the people in line to see Piranha 3D, but still.

  6. Mirrors was so freakin' terrible, I was embarassed for it. It did have an exploding nun at the end, though, but even that was not enought to save it.

  7. Alexandre Aja's strongest work for me is still "Switchblade Romance", which got released in the states as "High Tension" and is definatly worth watching if you havn't. I'm yet to see Mirrors which is offer of the week at my work, at the moment....well it would be if they sent some stock! Even though you say it sucks, after Jenn's exploding nun comment I just want to see it more :)
I also have to watch Jean Rollin's "Killing Car" at some point, which I'm blaming on you Jenn for getting me intrested with his work. he he

  8. I want to see this movie so bad - a must-see in so many ways! Thanks for reminding me.

Funnily enough, Piranha is being remade, and stars porn star Riley Steele. I will be watching...

Jenn, with regards to the gorgeous chick on the cover, is there any way you could electronically or digitally mask out that accursed red bikini so that we could see that incredible bird completely naked, thanks.
