Some quick thoughts on the movies I watched tonite

Sam went to go get the step kids in New Joisey today and I was off so I had all day to watch movies and dye my hair, which was a nice break. The BFF stopped by and we gossiped for a bit, drank some wine, smoked some cigs, and then I watched me some movies.

First up was Cavalcade favorite David Cronenberg's RABID. I have been a life long fan of Cronenberg, as long time readers know, but I am ashamed to admit having never seen this one before. And being as how we'll be meeting and greeting with DC in Toronto in less than three months, I might as well finish off his filmography beforehand. And of course I wasn't disappointed. Taking queues from SHIVERS (one of my all time faves), we've got body horror to the tenth degree here with ex-porn star Maryl yin Chambers as a victim of a horrendous motorcycle accident receiving skin graphs that turn her into a vampiress of sorts with a 'penis' that comes out of her armpit in order to sate her thirst for blood. Men, women, whathaveyou, it just turns into an all out feast as she infects the general public of Montreal with her brand of rabies. And the casting choices are by no means an accident, as she seems to relish her role and actually does a fairly decent job as infected seductress with a need to feed. I loved it. I have plenty more to say about this one, but suffice it to say, I'm a bit too drunk to be all academic and eloquent, even though I would like to be.

Up next, I watched EMMANUEL AND THE WHITE SLAVE TRADE. No stranger to director Joe D'amato's 'black Emmanuel' films, this was a little different as we see nympho Emmanuel infiltrate a high falutin' prostituion ring for journalistic ends. Okay, maybe it's not all that different, but here we get to see a drag queen get into a kung fu fight in a bowling alley (!) and Emmanuel actually does get raped. Usually, she escapes such unpleasantness with her cunningness, but here, not so much. There's still the James Bondian elements and spy cameras hidden in zippos, and loads of gratuitous nudity and sex, but there's a pretty filthy vibe here, just because sexy Laura Gemser doesn't escape as she usually does. Good stuff none the less and her real life hubby Gabriel Tinti stars as well. I've always found it weird that these two have done so many flicks together, being as how they are just shy of prOn, but hey, they're European.

I'm currently in the midst of the Lon Chaney collection with ACE OF HEARTS but am taking a break to write this and drink some more wine. It's tragic how Chaney always loved from a distance in his films. Think about it. It's a recurring thing in all his movies. I would have loved him up close and personal.

I have to work breakfast in the morn, but I assure you, more movies will be watched and processed. As I'm watching all this glorious stuff from the seventies and even the twenties, I hate mainstream movies all the more. If I have to make one more cosmo because of all the bitches coming in my restaurant because Sex and the City 2 is playing I may kill myself. Seriously, I got an order for eight cosmos on one ticket the other night! Kill me now!

Emanuelle NOT helping others, only getting what SHE wants

One of the problems with drinking so much is that you never remember what you've watched or what you've watched all the way through. So you've got to go back when you're sober, or at least just on your first glass of wine, and say, okay, I think I might have seen this before but maybe not, so let me continue to drink and see what happens. This happened when I watched, and then subsequently rewatched, Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals. I'm sitting there, going, hey all of this looks really familiar, yet I remember none of it, and hey, where's the bestiality? This was directed by Joe D'Amato and starred Laura Gemser, was it not?

So what's to be said now that I guess I've watched this twice. It's your typical D'Amato/Gemser paring - Laura is jet-set reporter Emanuelle sent to exotic locales to uncover shocking (!) material, in this case, ooh, cannibalism. So what I've come to expect from these two is lots and lots of gratuitous sex (ok, check), a bit of masturbation during a voyeuristic experience (check and check) and bestiality (er, no check here, oddly, and as much as I truly enjoyed watching snake and dog penetration in Emanuelle Around the World, who wouldn't, right?, I wasn't lacking in this department this go-round). So lack of bestiality aside, I somehow welcomed the cannibalism which somehow seems less taboo than the bestiality. Most things do, I suppose.

Okay, you know how Emanuelle is kinda like James Bond? She always gives her real name and still gets invited into these exclusive places to take pictures and report on scandalous stuff? Well, of course, this is no exception. But what I really enjoyed about her espionage this time is that instead of wearing a stylish gold bracelet to conceal her camera, she carries around a creepy babydoll with a hidden camera instead. Tell me how that isn't conspicuous as hell? So she's walking around with a baby doll, the director of the institution holding the cannibal girl knows her name and occupation, and still lets her in to do journalism stuff, and by journalism I strictly mean fingering a cannibal while asking her her name, then subsequently aiming the babydoll camera at her for some candid photos.
Then Em is off to watch a 'snuff' type film of some ritualistic cannibalism from the Amazon. Adultery has supposedly taken place so the wife's family eats the husband's penis. Perfectly sensible, if you ask me. So this spurs Em to want to take a trip to the Amazon for a cannibal expose so she does fuckey times with some guy and then there's a nun and  some more fuckey times and a bit more masturbation and maybe some interracial sex and some gore. By this point, I'm on at least my third to fifth glass of wine. And I may or may not have had a shot of bourbon.
Basically, it comes down to this. Take out all the sex in a crappy Emanuelle movie and what do you have? A generic tale of a reporter uncovering something stupid to no end really. It's not like Emanuelle really ever helps anyone. Hell, she sexually molests a cannibal she is trying to interview. Em only perpetrates what she wants to perpetrate. She gets her pictures, gets fucked quite a bit (or is it she who is doing the fucking?) but we never get to see the outcome of her great articles. We know she's famous for these articles, but what comes of it? Really, at the end of the movie, we don't give a shit because this is a glorified skin flick. I don't know why I'm getting worked up about it, but Em's movies are not about helping others, they're about fucking. And sometimes gore too, this one had a bit of gore, quite a bit more than the others I've watched. I want badly to find meaning where there isn't any - although the merit here is obviously sex and gore. Basically, I guess it's all you need, sleaze and guts.
I think my problem, I guess if I really have a problem, because I do love watching these movies, is that this shit tries to look more expensive than it is. It talks a sweet game but really, this is just the kind of movie people would congregate to go masturbate in a theatre too, which, by the way, is something that I'm obsessed with, the whole going to a theatre to masturbate phenomenon. While those 'types' of theatres on a whole don't exist much any more, I'd still like the option of going to a movie and being able to masturbate in peace. It's a nasty thought, a whole theatre of people masturbating, but I love it. Who knows for what reason. Oh, yeah, because it's shocking, ooh. If Joe D'Amato was still around (is he? I think he died in the 80's) he could send Em on a expedition to the Duece and she could uncover the seedy side of 42nd street.
and is it just me, or is Laura Gemser way too fucking skinny? Her freakin' collar bone looks like it could cut you?
Okay, I'm officially off to Chicago for Weekend of Horrors. I haven't packed yet and the wine is a'flowing. I have to get up at 7 a.m. to catch my flight and hopefully the cats will be squared away and I won't be too hungover. I'm super excited to catch the I-talian panel with Dedato, I 'm sure I'll have lots and lots and lots of goodies to post on my return.

Emanuelle Around the World

So I'm nowhere near completing my education on the Emanuelle movies, mainly those commonly referred to as the Black Emanuelle movies, that starred the lovely, the seductive, the incredibly sexy, Laura Gemser. (I can't help but wondering what she looks like today. Has she aged gracefully? Does she look like a sexy grandma or has she aged really badly and is basically unrecognizable? She should make convention appearances, but then at which conventions would she appear? Vintage sleaze sexploitation conventions? God, please let there be something like that invented just for me. Anyway, I'm rambling.) I think Emanuelle Around the World is like the fifth one staring Ms. Gemser that I've watched so far and I'm totally hooked. I started with Emanuelle in America, directed by Joe D'Amato and Emanuelle Around the World is also directed by D'Amato so it bears many similarities. I can't wait to see some of the other films she starred in for D'Amato because they seem to be a bit more wild than the ones he didn't direct, namely Emanuelle on Taboo Island and Sister Emanuelle, which is more from another girl's perspective that it is from Emanuelle's. Again, I digress.
Emanuelle is a jet-set photo-journalist famous for uncovering 'shocking' events, namely those events involving sexy scenarios (and some not so sexy but involving sex, which I'll get to in a second). This outing, she's off to uncover white slavery prostitution rings in a variety of exotic locales. More digression, I did watch this over two sittings, one late at night, having drunken several glasses of wine, the second being the next morning with a bit of a hangover. Anyway, she goes to Rome and manages to get invited to a party where this prostitution ring is operated. One things leads to another, and she's bound and gagged about to be raped by the 'boss,' a deformed man with a burnt looking face and a yellowed over eye. She is squirming around too much so the 'boss' selects another nubile young thing and rapes her instead of our titular heroine, if you could call Emanuelle a heroine, but I might get to that later, too. Then, the prostitution ring gets busted up by an phone call aptly placed by a young man Emanuelle had enlisted for this very task. She repays him  by having sex with him in a closet on his father's yacht while his stepmother has sex with her female maid in the main cabin.
Then I fell asleep. And it was hard to remember where I left off. So....when I started to write this review, I couldn't remember every single detail so from here on out, I'll just list what I think is important.
Next, Emanuelle visits a Indian guru. She witnesses, and briefly participates, in a giant orgy. I don't know how much of this has to do with white slavery, or if that was even mentioned. The scenes are totally hardcore at this point. So much for that softcore shit, right? This is what I love about Emanuelle movies. I cannot imagine an age where you could go to a theatre, sit in the dark, and watch a movie like Emanuelle Around the World with a bunch of other people jacking off around you. I was born too late I often think. I would have loved to walk up to a box office, purchase a ticket for a film, and be treated to something like this. Because wait, it gets weirder, more hardcore, and bestial. I wonder what other people's reactions to this would have been. And granted, there are a lot more hardcore films out there, especially now, than D'Amato's seventies take on the genre, if you could call pornography a genre, but this is where all that started, right? These are famous, artsy pornos, essentially.
Anyway....of course Emanuelle manages to fuck the guru and check out his Kama Sutra school, a surreal collection of images of women in varying positions with giant stone penises. Fast forward a bit...
Emanuelle's in Macau and she winds up during her pursuit of yet another prostitution ring, in the hands of Chang. She tells Chang she wants to make a lot of money and Chang ties her up and forces her to watch a few acts that might ensure her employment with his organization. For instance, a bound girl is treated to milk being poured about her most private of areas and then a snake is released, because, according the expert Chang, this particular snake loves milk. He puts the snake inside her, she rolls around in horror/feigned ectasy, and Chang laughs maniacally. This all goes on waaaaaaaaay to long for my taste, and when that subsides, another bound girl is raped by a German shepard, again set to the tune of Chang's maniacal laughter. Before a similar fate can befall Emanuelle, her reporter lady friend busts in and shoots up the place. There is talk that the dog is still aroused and should be unleashed on Chang, but alas, we aren't treated to that image.
Having white slavery as the story arc, you end up with lots of different kinds of sex. It's such a great premise for a movie like Emanuelle Around the World because appeals to whatever you might be into. It's got lesbian stuff, animal stuff, rape fetish stuff, softcore, hardcore, sex with fruit, you name it, it's in there, at least in this one and when she's in America. Since it's Emanuelle that is taking us around the world, she is spared from the violence herself. She always manages to elude her captors and fornicates with who she deems appropriate. No harm comes to her and she is free to continue her work exposing injustices to woman and expressing herself sexually as she pleases. But that's just it, she exposes these injustices, but what does she do to help the women that these fates have been bestowed upon? Sure, she frees the girls involved in Chang's bestiality, but by merely just exposing white slavery rings, she doesn't really DO anything or make any comment about the wrongness of what she has seen or been involved in. She takes pictures of these events with her hidden bracelet camera, and she fucks a bunch of men and women, but can she really be seen in a feminist light? Sure, it's the swinging seventies and she does what she wants when she wants to, but refrains from actually having an opinion on any issues whatsoever.
Curious even still is her ability to infiltrate these organizations and webs of crime. She always gives her real name, her bracelet camera is painfully obvious, and many times, tells people her occupation and intent to uncover the operations. At one point, a guy involved in a harem says, oh yeah, look, it's those American lady reporters. They're famous the world over. People know Emanuelle and her reputation in these movies, so why do they keep letting her into their brothels, Kama Sutra schools, orgies and parties? Because they want to fuck her too, I suppose. She exudes sex so everyone just must do as she says in any circumstance.
Perhaps I'm searching for depth where there isn't much? Emanuelle is beautiful and exotic, I get it. These films contain sexual scenarios for whatever it is that may turn ya on. With the international locations, the film seems more expensive and better than it actually is. The fashion is absolutely superb in that great seventies way. And like I said before, I'm quite smitten with these films and the era in which they were made right now. I won't make any judgments right now about whether or not Emanuelle is the seventies spokeswoman for feminism or anything, but she's fun to watch, if nothing else. And I've got my work cut out for me. There are a lot of Emanuelle movies out there.
