RIP Divine

Today marks the passing of the greatest entertainer in the history of the world (and I'm really not being dramatic either), Glenn Harris Milstead, the mighty Divine! It's been 24 years since Divy suffered a heart attack before he was supposed to make his mainstream television debut on MARRIED WITH CHILDREN. The story goes that after he died (in his hotel room where he was waiting to go show), the producers sent a bouquet to his funeral with a card that read, 'If you didn't want to be on the show, you could have just told us.' I think he would have liked that. Long live DIVINE!!!!!!

Now go watch FEMALE TROUBLE. It's my favorite.

Happy Birthday Divine

Today would have been the legendary Divine's 66th birthday. Watch PINK FLAMINGOS or FEMALE TROUBLE, quote every line, and then stare longingly at the framed photo of Divine with Santa Claus you keep in your entryway while you fight back tears. You are missed, you beautiful creature. You are missed.

Our Lady

Two days ago, March 7, marked the twenty-second anniversary of the death of the greatest performers to have ever lived. I'm talking about none other than Divine. I was only ten when Divine passed away from heart failure the night before she was supposed to appear on Married...With Children, but I would discover her about ten years later, when the BFF and I caught PINK FLAMINGOS at a midnight show at the old revival theatre where I worked. I was early into my weird movie watching quest. Not quite sure what I was seeing unfold (chicken fucking, poop eating, asshole singing), I was hooked. It's like a genre unto itself. I get the title of this blog from some of Divine's finest work in MULTIPLE MANIACS and I count FEMALE TROUBLE as one of the my favorite movies of all time. I think I've seen it more times than anything else. Divine's career is truly one of those things that reminds me to keep it weird and wonderful all the time. I love you, Divy.

Divine Christmas

Nothing says Christmas like a three-hundred pound drag queen pushing the tree over on her mother because she didn't receive cha-cha heels. Seriously, it's not Christmas if I don't watch this scene with Divine from Female Trouble at least six or seven times. And you'd be surprised at how many people have recently told me real-life stories of the tree falling on a family member.
